EU Sounds Alarm on Unsafe Cosmetics from China
The European Commission has sounded the alarm over a significant rise in unsafe cosmetic imports from China, revealing that cosmetics now comprise one-third of all dangerous product alerts in the EU. According to the annual Safety Gate report, banned substances like BMHCA—a harmful synthetic fragrance—are prevalent in 97% of flagged cosmetic products. This poses serious risks to consumer health, including potential impacts on fertility and skin allergies. Hazardous materials such as cadmium, nickel, lead, and phthalates have also been detected in other products like jewelry and clothing. In response, the Commission plans to enforce stricter regulations through the first-ever online marketplace safety sweep, targeting non-compliant goods under the upcoming General Product Safety Regulation. Brands sourcing from China must prioritize compliance amid heightened scrutiny, especially in e-commerce.
