NKU's Simulation Lab: Discovering Diverse Healthcare Careers
2024-12-02
Northern Kentucky University's College of Health and Human Services is making significant strides in guiding students towards diverse medical field careers. With tours to local high schools and a state-of-the-art simulation center, students are exposed to a wide range of options.

Unlock a World of Medical Opportunities at NKU

College Tours and Student Interest

Students from Campbell County High School recently joined a tour of the college facility. Director Trina Cossin emphasizes that many students aspire to work in healthcare but are unaware of the various paths available. The tours aim to showcase alternative careers such as lab technicians, imaging technicians, and more.

These tours have become popular as high schools have students interested in a health career. As Cossin mentions, "We can't even accommodate all the tour requests that we get." The college's Center for Simulation Education within the College of Health and Human Services provides a unique learning environment.

The Simulation Center - A Real-Life Healthcare Experience

The simulation center features eight inpatient simulation rooms, including an operating room and a multi-bed critical care room. It also has a simulated home health environment and eight outpatient examination rooms. Cossin proudly states that there is nothing like it in the area.

Students can practice real-life healthcare situations here, gaining valuable hands-on experience. Owen Setters, an NKU Nursing student and ambassador, explains how they use mannequins to show the human body and its functions through simulations. It offers a different perspective that students don't get in a classroom or regular field trip.

Programs Offered Beyond Nursing

In addition to nursing, the college offers allied health programs such as radiologic science, respiratory care, radiation therapy, and a non-clinical program. There is also kinesiology, athletic training, occupational therapy, and more.

For example, senior Jazlynn Miller, who attended the tour, was initially interested in forensic science but realized the importance of knowing about different aspects of the medical field. Her personal experience with a knee injury led her to consider physical therapy. She said, "I'm really enjoying the fact that I'm hearing a little bit about everything like you could do physical therapy, or you could do radiology."

Student Ambassadors and Their Role

NKU Nursing student Owen Setters serves as an ambassador during the tours, showing students what life is like in an NKU program. He highlights the importance of exposing students to different fields and helping them discover their interests.

Setters believes that the college is providing them with unique experiences that they wouldn't get elsewhere. It's about showing students the possibilities and helping them make informed decisions about their future careers.

Biden Admin's Healthcare Proposals: Tackling Biased AI & Expanding Medicare
2024-12-02
The Biden administration's actions in the healthcare sector have been making waves. On Tuesday, a set of sweeping proposals were put forth that are set to bring significant changes. These proposals aim to enhance access to crucial healthcare options and strengthen regulations.

Unveiling the Biden Administration's Healthcare Prowess

Expanding Medicare Access to GLP-1 Weight-Loss Drugs

The Biden administration's decision to have Medicare plans greatly expand access to blockbuster GLP-1 weight-loss drugs is a significant step. These drugs have shown great promise in helping individuals manage their weight and improve their overall health. By making them more accessible through Medicare, more people will have the opportunity to benefit from this treatment. It shows a commitment to addressing the growing issue of obesity and its associated health problems. For example, studies have shown that GLP-1 drugs can lead to significant weight loss and improvements in metabolic parameters. This expansion of access is likely to have a positive impact on the lives of many individuals who have been struggling with weight-related issues.

Barring Insurers from Skipping Certain Claims

Another important aspect of the Biden administration's healthcare proposals is the barring of insurers from skipping out on paying certain claims that were granted prior authorization. This ensures that patients do not face unnecessary financial burdens due to insurer delays or denials. It provides a level of security and protection for patients, knowing that their legitimate claims will be paid. Insurers often use prior authorization as a way to delay or deny claims, which can cause significant stress and financial hardship for patients. By putting an end to this practice, the Biden administration is working to make the healthcare system more fair and accessible for everyone.

Reinforcing Guardrails on AI Use in Healthcare

The use of AI in healthcare is on the rise, and it is important to have proper guardrails in place to ensure its safe and effective use. The Biden administration's proposals aim to reinforce these guardrails and prevent any potential misuse of AI. AI has the potential to revolutionize healthcare by improving diagnosis, treatment planning, and patient care. However, it also poses certain risks if not used properly. By establishing clear guidelines and regulations, the administration is helping to ensure that AI is used in a way that benefits patients rather than causing harm. This includes measures such as ensuring data privacy and security, as well as conducting proper research and validation of AI algorithms.
