SSAB, a Nordic and US-based steel company along with its subsidiary Ruukki Construction, has made a significant donation to aid in the reconstruction of war-damaged buildings in Ukraine. This act of philanthropy is in collaboration with OperationAid, focusing on the urgent rebuilding needs of the Mykolaiv region. The donation encompasses approximately 3,000m² of color-coated steel for roofing, manufactured at Ruukki's plant near the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, and nearly 20 tonnes of steel for the production of around 750 field stoves. Sarholms Plåtdetaljer, which undertakes contract work in sheet metal, will be in charge of manufacturing the stoves using the donated steel. OperationAid has been actively engaged on the ground in Ukraine, addressing immediate requirements, fundraising, and delivering humanitarian and medical aid. The ongoing partnership between SSAB, Ruukki Construction, and OperationAid has witnessed similar contributions in the past years, with donations also being made in 2022 and 2023.

SSAB's Sustainability Efforts

SSAB Sustainability head Christina Friborg stated, "We want to demonstrate our continuous support to Ukrainians. At the same time, we ensure the safety of our employees. There is a shortage of building products in the country, and it is remarkable that our Ukrainian employees have persistently provided high-quality roofing products and services to the renovation industry."Earlier in October this year, SSAB partnered with Finnish construction company Parmaco to create a concept building using fossil-free steel, highlighting the potential for sustainable urban development. Additionally, SSAB entered into a letter of intent with Norwegian distributor Smith Stål for future deliveries of fossil-free steel in the same month. This initiative aims to establish a carbon-neutral supply chain and reduce carbon dioxide emissions from traditional steel production.

Ruukki Construction's Operations in Ukraine

Ruukki Construction operates a facility in Kopyliv near Kyiv on a limited schedule and employs a total of 63 staff members in the country. This local presence allows them to be actively involved in the reconstruction efforts and contribute to the recovery of the war-torn region.

The Impact of the Donation

The donation of roofing products and steel by SSAB and Ruukki Construction has had a profound impact on the reconstruction process in Ukraine. It has provided essential materials for the repair and construction of damaged buildings, giving hope to the affected communities. The stoves produced using the donated steel will also help meet the basic needs of the people during the winter months. This collaborative effort showcases the power of corporate social responsibility and the positive change that can be achieved through such initiatives.
