2024-12-04
Spotify Wrapped is here, bringing a host of new features and updates. From an AI-powered podcast to expanded social media integrations and more, let's dive into the world of Spotify's annual listening recap.

Unlock the Magic of Your Music with Spotify Wrapped

Spotify Wrapped: The Streamer's Annual Listening Recap

Spotify Wrapped, the much-awaited annual listening summary, has finally arrived. It not only provides a personalized overview of your favorite artists, songs, podcasts, and more but also introduces two exciting new features this year. One of the notable additions is an AI-powered podcast created with Google's NotebookLM, giving you an in-depth look at your 2024 listening habits. Another new feature is the "Your Music Evolution" data story, which allows you to trace how your musical interests have changed over the past year.

Previously, Spotify built its Wrapped features in-house. But this year, they are collaborating with an outside partner on a flagship Wrapped feature using Google's Gemini AI. This enables you to explore a personalized audio overview of your music listening in 2024, including top songs, artists, genres, and more. It feels like listening to a podcast about your Wrapped.

The Addition of Google's AI Notetaking Tool

The addition of Google's AI notetaking tool, NotebookLM, has been a breakout moment. People started using its Audio Overview feature to create conversations between two AI hosts, leading to interesting insights and humorous commentary. Spotify was inspired by this and decided to work with Google on the new Wrapped feature.

When you play your Wrapped "podcast" from the Home screen of the Spotify app, the AI hosts will compliment your music taste and summarize your listening activity. You can also save the AI-created audio clip to your mobile device or share it on social media. This feature is available to both free and paid users in English in several countries like the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland, and Sweden for a limited time.

Expanding Social Media Integrations

Spotify is also expanding its social media integrations to include sharing on TikTok. This is an ideal way to share the new personalized AI audio experiences. While the AI podcast is likely to be a hit on social media, it feels somewhat iterative compared to last year's addition of the AI DJ feature.

The AI DJ feature integrates your Wrapped into its spoken commentary and stories. It is available in both English and Spanish, offering AI-generated commentary around your top artists and songs. This year, you have two AI speakers instead of one, adding a new dimension to your musical history.

AI Playlists for Premium Subscribers

Another AI feature is aimed at Premium subscribers. They can enter prompts to generate AI playlists based on their Wrapped experience, building on the existing AI playlist feature launched in April. For example, you can prompt Spotify to play more artists like your top 5 Wrapped artists.

Personalized Data Stories and More

Wrapped didn't introduce as many new personalized data stories as in previous years. However, the "Your Music Evolution" feature is a significant addition. It tracks up to three distinct musical phases you went through during the year, providing a unique perspective on your musical journey.

Audiobooks are also a new addition to Wrapped in 2024. The Spotify audiobooks catalog has doubled to over 300,000 titles, and Wrapped includes a new audiobooks editorial hub. It offers a dedicated Wrapped experience for authors and publishers to see how their work was engaged with by Spotify users.

Other areas of the Wrapped experience have also been updated. The Top 5 Artists Story now shows your "Longest Listening Streak." When sharing music or podcasts, Spotify tells you if it's in your top 100 songs, top 20 artists, or top 5 podcasts. The "Top Listeners" feature is back, allowing you to brag to friends about your long-time love for a favorite artist.

Artist video clips are making a comeback, with thousands of artists sharing messages to top fans. This year, Wrapped also adds Podcaster Clips, with video messages from popular podcasters like Emma Chamberlain, Ashley Flowers, Markiplier, Steven Bartlett, and others. In celebration of Top Artist Taylor Swift, there are several Easter Eggs in the app with Era-themed animations.

The company also revealed its top lists for 2024.
