The Coronado High School Girls Tennis Team: From Defeat to Near-Glory
2024-11-18
The Coronado High School Girls Tennis Team's journey this season has been a rollercoaster of emotions. With a remarkable 12-6 victory over Valley Center, they advanced to the quarterfinals of the Division III CIF San Diego Section Championships. However, their dreams were dashed as they narrowly lost to eventual champion Clairemont High School with a score of 9-9 (80-77).

Unforgettable Moments in Coronado High School Girls Tennis

Advancing to the Quarterfinals

The team's path to the quarterfinals was a testament to their determination. Despite a season record of 6-11, they managed to secure six wins with a relatively small number of returning players. These players took it upon themselves to recruit athletes from other sports, such as eight lacrosse players, one softball player, and a soccer player who were new to tennis. This diverse group came together to form a formidable team.In the quarterfinals match against Clairemont, the Islanders tied the number of sets won at 9-9. This is an extremely rare occurrence, as across the 36 matches played between Clairemont and Coronado during the 2024 season, only two ended in a tie. The first tiebreaker is the number of games won across all 18 sets. In their previous meeting on Oct. 17, Coronado lost by 2 games (78-76), but on Oct 30, they were just 3 games behind (80-77).

Scoring System in High School Tennis

The scoring system in high school tennis is quite unique. Each of the three singles players plays one set against the opponent's singles players, and each of the three doubles teams plays one set against the opponent's double teams. For example, the CHS #1 singles player plays a six-game set against the opponent's #1, #2, and #3 players, totaling three sets. The same goes for the #2 and #3 singles players and the three doubles teams. In all, the teams play nine sets of singles and nine sets of doubles, with each set won counting as one point.During the quarterfinals match, Grace Elardo won two sets in singles, and Ella Peterson won one. In doubles, the duos of Lilah Cade and Logan Shapiro, Brynn Belong and Samantha Aldworth, and Casilida Sanchez and Josephine Zwierzynski all won two sets each.

Victory over Valley Center

On Oct. 29, the #5-seed Coronado team achieved a significant victory in the first round of the Division III Team Tournament against Valley Center High School with a score of 12-6. In doubles, the teams of Cade/Shapiro and Belong/Aldworth won all three sets they played. The doubles team of Sanchez/Zwierzynski won two sets, while in singles, Elardo won two sets and Peterson and Rio Kramer each won one. This victory gave the team a much-needed boost as they headed into the quarterfinals.Logan Shapiro (left) and Lilah Cade can be seen strategizing between points, showing the team's focus and determination on the court.Clairemont went on to win the CIF Division III title by beating Valhalla in the semifinals with a score of 10-8 and University City in the finals with the same score. Despite their loss in the quarterfinals, Coronado proved to be Clairemont's toughest opponent.
