Jordan Marotto, Julia Laury, and Gwenn Ricordel each secured convincing singles victories, setting the tone for Redwood's dominant performance. Marotto's 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Mirabel Arlander set the stage, while Laury and Ricordel both recorded impressive 6-0, 6-0 wins against Alexa Warrin and Olivia Shekou, respectively. Abilene Christian University (ACU) made history by hosting the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) men's and women's tennis tournament for the first time. The event showcased the university's exceptional facilities and provided a platform for talented student-athletes to showcase their skills on the court.

A Warm Welcome and Impressive Facilities

ACU's men's head coach, Juan Nunez, expressed his delight at the opportunity to host the prestigious tournament. "It's great. Even just the way other teams react to the facility that we have, the school is an opportunity to come to Abilene, to come to ACU," he said. "Just being able to bring everybody else here and let people see what we have and what we can offer is amazing."The university's state-of-the-art tennis facilities provided the perfect backdrop for the tournament, leaving a lasting impression on the visiting teams and spectators alike. The chance to showcase ACU's capabilities and hospitality was a significant milestone for the program.

Men's Team Shines with WAC Tournament Victory

In 2022, the ACU men's team emerged victorious in the WAC tournament, cementing their status as a force to be reckoned with. This year, the team boasted one of the tournament favorites, senior Daniel Morozov from Joliet, Illinois.Despite their strong showing, the men's doubles team fell in the first round to the University of Texas at Arlington. In the singles bracket, Morozov advanced to the semifinals before falling to UTA's Andres Medus, the eventual men's singles champion.Coach Nunez acknowledged the high expectations placed on Morozov, a seasoned player with extensive experience. "I didn't expect for it to be that much on Daniel, him being a senior and a very experienced player that has played big matches for us here and even before coming to college," Nunez said. "That's a kid that has played all over the world and has had plenty of big match experience."

Women's Team Battles with Determination

The ACU women's team also competed with passion, fielding two singles players in the tournament. Olivia Sears, a junior from Goshen, Indiana, made it to the quarterfinals before falling to Tarleton State University. Masha Vrsalovic, a junior from Cochabamba, Bolivia, was eliminated in the first round by Utah Tech University.Women's head coach Bryan Rainwater acknowledged the team's initial nerves, which he believed impacted their performance. "Everybody competed super well," Rainwater said. "We went in with a little bit of nerves and I think that cost us a little bit–Started off slow in both of the singles."

Preparing for the Spring Season

With the fall season now concluded, both the men's and women's teams are focused on the upcoming spring season. For the women's team, the primary goal is to get healthy and strengthen their singles lineup."Getting healthy is just the biggest thing for this fall," Rainwater said. "We had two or three injuries at times where people didn't get to play in tournaments so we didn't get to see what they could do."The men's team, with a roster predominantly composed of freshmen and sophomores, will concentrate on collective growth and development."There's a lot of growth that we need to do in the next two to three months that we need to do to be ready for spring," Nunez said. "I think we're very talented and very deep as far as the lineup goes. We need to become a better team and they just need to establish themselves here at ACU."As the teams prepare for the spring season, the ACU community eagerly awaits the opportunity to witness their continued progress and success on the court.
