Recuerdo con cariño el día en que tuve la suerte de conocer a Don Fernando del Arco de Izco (Barcelona, 1933 - Barcelona, 2024). En aquel momento, coincidimos en el antiguo ascensor del Ateneo de Barcelona durante un congreso magnífico organizado por la Plataforma para la Defensa de la Fiesta. Le dije que sabía quién era y de inmediato me invitó a que el próximo sábado pudiera visitar su maravillosa biblioteca, un santuario para todos los amantes de los toros y especialmente para aquellos que tenemos a la literatura taurina como nuestra pasión dentro del gusto por la fiesta de los toros.

Una Biblioteca Sagrada

Fernando poseía un tesoro inmenso. Presumía de tener más de once mil títulos taurómacos en sus estanterías y, en particular, de contar con más de mil -si mi memoria no me falla- libros sobre la figura de Manuel Rodríguez Sánchez "Manolete", su musa, su fuente de inspiración para caminar por la vida y su tema de polémica preferido en casa, ya que Conchi, su esposa y compañera de vida, era partidaria de Carlos Arruza.Durante mis primeras visitas a su piso en la calle Padua, solía llevar un listado corto de títulos -para mí imposibles de conseguir- pensando que no los tendría Fernando, pero siempre me decepciona. Entre todos y por nombrar algunos, recuerdo las primeras y segundas ediciones de todas las tauromaquias, como la de Pepe Hillo o Paquiro, los originales de Peña y Goñi, Juan Belmonte "El Trágico" de Abraham Valdelomar, o el manuscrito de México, "Diez veces llanto", de Fernando Vinyes.

La Bodega Padua

Hace ya algunos años, después del intento de prohibición de la fiesta por parte de la clase política en Cataluña, la Bodega Padua, muy cerca de su casa, se convirtió en su lugar favorito para recibir a sus amigos. Siempre llegaba a los encuentros con un libro de regalo y su gran sentido del humor.Un día, durante una visita a su biblioteca, me di cuenta de que en la estantería del Pasmo de Triana, había dos ejemplares de la primera edición de Juan Belmonte matador de toros, de Chaves Nogales. Desde entonces, no podía olvidarlo y lo recordaba en cada visita. Hasta que en una ocasión en la Bodega, al llevarle uno de mis libros con la ilusión de formar parte de su bibliografía, me preguntó por qué me había dado aquel libro. Con una sonrisa y sin dejar la costumbre, le dije que nada, que si me quería dar algo, que me diera uno de los dos libros de Chaves Nogales. Me miró fijamente antes de sacar un sobre de manila con el libro. No es necesario decir lo que desde entonces ese libro ha significado en mi biblioteca.

Como Presidente del Círculo

Hace algunos años, como presidente del Círculo de amigos de la Dinastía Bienvenida en Barcelona, Fernando quería que yo lo ayudara con las conferencias de la feria de otoño de la Casa de Madrid en Barcelona. Formamos un equipo con Florencio García -su presidente-. Pero esto duró sólo una temporada. Al año siguiente, coincidiendo con la visita de Juan Lamarca, Fernando quiso nombrarme presidente del Círculo en Barcelona, un cargo que Lluís María Gibert depositó en Fernando y que hoy regento con orgullo bajo la sombra de grandes maestros.Descansa en paz, amigo mío.
