2024-11-27
This year, as families gather around the Thanksgiving table to share their gratitude, a significant milestone has been achieved in Southfield, Michigan. The 696 construction between Lahser and 696, which has been a long-awaited project, is now finally complete. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) made this exciting announcement on Wednesday, stating that 696 is open in both directions between I-275 and Lahser. This includes all on and off ramps, allowing traffic to flow freely once again on the freeway.

Experience the Freedom of Open 696 in Southfield

Completion of the 696 Construction Project

With the ongoing Restore the Reuther project in progress, MDOT took on the task of widening shoulders in the fall of 2022. This strategic move enabled traffic to shift onto the other side of the road as MDOT rebuilt 696 'from the base up'. It is an integral part of a $275 million project aimed at rebuilding the freeway, which also includes storm sewer replacement and the rebuilding of ramps at Orchard Lake Road, American Drive, Franklin Road, and Telegraph Road in Oakland County. The efforts of MDOT have truly transformed this section of the freeway, providing a safer and more efficient transportation route for commuters and travelers.

Although drivers will still notice barrels for signage and some final work in progress, this will be completed next spring. There is one more section remaining, with the I-696 section between 75 and Lahser set to begin in 2025 and expected to take three years to complete. This shows the continuous commitment of MDOT to improving the state's highways and bridges through initiatives like Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's Rebuilding Michigan program.

Impact on Traffic and Commuting

The completion of the 696 construction has had a significant impact on traffic in Southfield. Commuters no longer have to endure the delays and congestion associated with ongoing construction. Traffic now flows freely, reducing travel times and improving the overall driving experience. This is a welcome relief for those who rely on this freeway for their daily commutes or for traveling to different parts of the region. It also contributes to the economic development of the area by ensuring a smooth flow of goods and services.

Moreover, the improved infrastructure provided by the rebuilt 696 will enhance safety on the road. With wider shoulders and better ramp designs, accidents can be prevented or minimized. This not only benefits the drivers but also the pedestrians and cyclists sharing the road. The Rebuilding Michigan program's focus on state highways and bridges is crucial in ensuring the safety and well-being of all road users.

Future Plans and Continuity

While the immediate construction project is complete, MDOT's work does not end here. The upcoming I-696 section between 75 and Lahser will bring further improvements to the transportation network. Starting in 2025 and expected to take three years, this next phase of construction will continue to enhance the connectivity and efficiency of the area. It demonstrates MDOT's long-term vision and dedication to maintaining and upgrading the state's infrastructure.

The success of the 696 construction project is a testament to the collaborative efforts of MDOT and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's Rebuilding Michigan program. By investing in these infrastructure projects, Michigan is taking significant steps towards a more sustainable and prosperous future. The completed 696 construction serves as a model for other similar projects across the state, inspiring confidence in the ability to improve and modernize the transportation system.

Tunnell, Alvin, Fairlawn, Ontiveros Playground Build Begins in December
2024-11-28
After a months-long setback due to contract issues, the long-awaited playground construction is finally set to commence at four elementary schools within the Santa Maria-Bonita School District. This comes as a relief for students who have been without a playground for the first half of the school year. The construction will take place while the students are on winter break, ensuring minimal disruption to their learning.

Superintendent's Perspective

During the Nov. 13 school board meeting, the Santa Maria-Bonita school board unanimously approved contract agreements for the construction of playgrounds at Fairlawn, Tunnell, Alvin, and Ontiveros elementary schools. Superintendent Darren McDuffie expressed his gratitude for the educators' adaptability in filling the gap during the delay. He stated, "Though the delay in playground structure installations wasn't expected, our educators have once again demonstrated their incredible adaptability by finding creative and meaningful ways to fill the gap for students."The district allocated federal COVID-19 relief dollars to improve the playgrounds. Over the summer, the outdated equipment was removed, and new equipment was purchased with the goal of completing construction before the school year started. However, the initial bids didn't meet the requirements of involving businesses that employ disabled veterans, leading to the need for a re-bid.This time, the bids met the guidelines, and the contractors have started the preliminary work. The majority of the installation is planned for the end of December and the beginning of January when the schools are closed for break. Superintendent McDuffie emphasized the importance of this timely construction, saying, "Thank you to our school staff members and amazing students for their patience, resilience, and creativity as they navigate the challenges of being without playground equipment."

Impact on Students

The delays have left the students at the four sites playing on concrete slabs for the first part of the 2024-25 school year. Each school site has a significant number of students, with Alvin Elementary having the largest population at 1,000 students. Tunnell follows with 920 students, and Ontiveros and Fairlawn have 882 and 716 students respectively.During public comment at the Oct. 23 school board meeting, faculty from several sites reported an increase in behavioral issues both on and off the playground. The lack of a playground led to more competition for equipment, and students didn't get the needed mental release outside. This, in turn, made it difficult for them to focus when they returned to the classroom. In response, the school district allocated an additional $11,000 to each site to replace equipment as it sees more wear and tear. Faculty across the sites brought out various activities such as soccer balls, basketballs, jump ropes, sensory games, arts and crafts stations, giant puzzles, and tricycles to keep the students busy during recess. Tunnell Elementary School Principal Theresa Diaz shared her thoughts, saying, "It’s been challenging for kids; they miss the equipment and they ask about the slides and the swings, but it’s going to be beautiful and worth it once it gets here."The construction of these playgrounds will not only provide a much-needed recreational space for the students but also enhance their overall well-being and learning environment. It is a significant step towards creating a more enjoyable and fulfilling school experience for the children.
