Husker Football: The Week's Turmoil and Post-Season Plans
2024-12-10
Anyone who believed the Husker football season would simply fade away once the regular season ended might be mistaken. Just within a week, a series of significant events have unfolded. Three Husker assistants - Tony White, Terrance Knighton, and Garret McGuire - have left the program. Additionally, a remarkable 15 scholarship players have entered the transfer portal, including prominent names like QB Daniel Kaelin, RB Gabe Ervin Jr, WR Malachi Coleman, DE Jimari Butler, WR Dae’vonn Hall, DL Vincent Jackson, DE Kai Wallin, and CB Dwight Bootle. However, there was a moment of uncertainty as RB Emmett Johnson initially announced his transfer but then decided to stay at NU. On a more positive note, the Huskers have signed 20 players in the Class of ’25 and accepted an invitation to play Boston College in the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium on December 28th. Another notable hire was Kentucky WR coach Daikiel Shorts coming on board as the Husker WR coach, despite Kentucky having a 4-8 season and not being bowl eligible. Defensive analyst John Butler was named as the Husker DC for the bowl game.

Why the Departures?

The biggest shock to the Husker football program this week was when DC Tony White announced his departure to take a similar job at Florida State. While it was expected that his career at NU would be relatively short, most had anticipated him moving on to a head coaching position. A lateral move to a team that had a dismal 2-10 season this year came as a surprise. It's a real puzzle. Then came the news that DL coach Terrance Knighton would be joining him at FSU. Why? What's happening? Neither coach will be present for the bowl game. If you played a part in getting Nebraska to its first bowl game in eight years, why leave before the game? Apparently, White left due to his Florida roots and family there. Tony White is known for his high character, and for now, we'll accept his reason. But Knighton, born in Connecticut and having played college ball at Temple University, presents another mystery. We bid farewell to them (and Garret McGuire) for now. Maybe we need to stock up on some extra strength Selsun Blue...The current state of Husker football is a reflection of the ever-changing landscape of college football. It's a situation that requires getting used to as things aren't likely to improve anytime soon.

Amy Williams' 8-1 women's basketball team also gets some well-deserved attention. There have been other developments as well. Nebraska Defensive Lineman Keona Davis has entered the transfer portal, adding to the ongoing flux. The Common Fans have been discussing Frost's move to UCF, the Pinstripe Bowl, some positive transfer news, and the College Football Playoff and more. Emmett Johnson shared his thoughts on his return to Nebraska, emphasizing relationships, the RB room, a message for fans, and the future.
