Impact and Donation Details
Students collected food items between November 18th and 22nd. These donations will be utilized in the school's pantry, the Bay Six Project in Mingo Junction, and at Trinity Health System's Tony Teramana Cancer Center. Adviser Ashley Turnbull shared that this is the eighth year of this program where non-perishable items were collected by the students. Teachers even brought in turkeys to earn extra bonus points. The school managed to raise an astonishing 1,937 items, including boxed and canned goods such as stuffing, soup, tuna, pasta, and vegetables. Six turkeys were provided by teachers to assist with Thanksgiving meals.Student Participation

How the Order Ahead Food Locker Program Works
Imagine someone who doesn't qualify for food stamps but is working two jobs. They can easily visit the food locker and obtain their food in just about two minutes. By setting a pin and punching it in, they can open the locker, which can be either refrigerated or a freezer. This provides a convenient and efficient way for those in need to access essential food.
It's not just about getting food; it's about serving with dignity and respect. As Julie Anderson, the innovative technologies coordinator for the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana, explains, veterans, single parents, and the elderly can all benefit. They can come in the middle of the night if they prefer privacy, and this approach ensures that great food reaches great people in a very respectful manner.
The Current Status and Future Plans
Currently, there are five operational lockers in Northwest Indiana, and a sixth one is set to open soon in Crown Point. This expansion shows the growing impact of the program. It is currently helping to feed more than one thousand people each month, making a tangible difference in the lives of those facing food insecurity.
The goal is to eventually give customers the freedom to choose their own items. This personalized approach will further enhance the effectiveness of the program and provide even more options for those in need. It represents a step forward in the fight against hunger and a commitment to meeting the diverse needs of the community.
