Exploring Precision Medicine Awareness Among Healthcare Students at University of Nigeria Nsukka

In early 2024, a comprehensive survey was conducted among advanced healthcare students at the University of Nigeria Nsukka to assess their understanding and attitudes towards precision medicine. This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge and perceptions of medical laboratory science, nursing, medicine, and pharmacy students regarding this emerging field. The research focused on these specific groups due to their extensive exposure to medical concepts throughout their academic journey.

The survey included participants from various levels of study, ranging from fourth to sixth year, ensuring a diverse representation. Pharmacy students were based at the Nsukka campus, while other disciplines were located at the Enugu campus. Notably, the university offered both Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) and Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) programs. Only students who provided informed consent participated in the study. To ensure robust data collection, a minimum sample size of 339 was calculated using Raosoft® online tools, accounting for a 5% margin of error and a 95% confidence level. An additional 10% was added to accommodate potential nonresponses, resulting in a final sample size of 373.

The questionnaire used in this study was meticulously designed with 33 items divided into five sections. Section A gathered basic demographic information and initial awareness of precision medicine. Section B evaluated students' comfort levels with genomic testing concepts. Sections C and D assessed attitudes towards new practices and ethical considerations related to precision medicine, respectively. Finally, Section E gauged perceptions of precision medicine education. Data collection occurred through both paper-based and online formats, ensuring accessibility and convenience for all participants. Ethical approval was obtained from the Health Research and Ethics Committee, guaranteeing confidentiality and anonymity for all respondents.

This study underscores the importance of enhancing education and awareness about precision medicine among future healthcare professionals. By fostering a deeper understanding of this innovative approach, we can empower the next generation of doctors, nurses, and pharmacists to deliver more personalized and effective patient care. The findings highlight the need for integrated curricula that incorporate cutting-edge medical advancements, ultimately benefiting patient outcomes and advancing the field of healthcare.
