Advancing to the Quarterfinals
The team's path to the quarterfinals was a testament to their determination. Despite a season record of 6-11, they managed to secure six wins with a relatively small number of returning players. These players took it upon themselves to recruit athletes from other sports, such as eight lacrosse players, one softball player, and a soccer player who were new to tennis. This diverse group came together to form a formidable team.In the quarterfinals match against Clairemont, the Islanders tied the number of sets won at 9-9. This is an extremely rare occurrence, as across the 36 matches played between Clairemont and Coronado during the 2024 season, only two ended in a tie. The first tiebreaker is the number of games won across all 18 sets. In their previous meeting on Oct. 17, Coronado lost by 2 games (78-76), but on Oct 30, they were just 3 games behind (80-77).Scoring System in High School Tennis
The scoring system in high school tennis is quite unique. Each of the three singles players plays one set against the opponent's singles players, and each of the three doubles teams plays one set against the opponent's double teams. For example, the CHS #1 singles player plays a six-game set against the opponent's #1, #2, and #3 players, totaling three sets. The same goes for the #2 and #3 singles players and the three doubles teams. In all, the teams play nine sets of singles and nine sets of doubles, with each set won counting as one point.During the quarterfinals match, Grace Elardo won two sets in singles, and Ella Peterson won one. The doubles team of Sanchez/Zwierzynski won two sets, while in singles, Elardo won two sets and Peterson and Rio Kramer each won one.
