On a memorable Saturday, December 7th, 2024, in Paris, Tenn., an extraordinary event took place. The Fraternal Order of Police Tennessee-Kentucky Lake Lodge 17 embarked on a heartwarming journey by taking 224 children Christmas shopping. This initiative was a true testament to the spirit of giving and community support.

Shopping Begins at Paris Elementary School

The shopping trip commenced at Paris Elementary School, where the children were joyfully paired with shopping guides. These guides then accompanied the children on a drive to the Wal-Mart Supercenter, setting the stage for an unforgettable Christmas shopping spree. Each child was given the wonderful opportunity to spend $100 on Christmas presents, allowing them to select gifts that would bring joy to their families during the holiday season. When the children returned to P.E.S., they were greeted with a delightful surprise - a stuffed animal, a bag of fruit, breakfast items, and other goodies. This added touch made the experience even more special.During this shopping trip, an unexpected guest made an appearance - the Grinch. He was at Walmart, adding a touch of fun and excitement to the event. The children were thrilled to see the Grinch and it created a memorable moment for them.

F.O.P. President's Words

F.O.P. President and retired Chief Chuck Elizondo expressed his gratitude, stating, "Henry County has once again shown its generosity by providing generous donations, which enabled us to increase the shopping amount to $100 per child. We are truly fortunate to have over a hundred volunteers come together and assist 224 children from this amazing community. This act of kindness will have a lasting impact on these children's lives."

Police Agencies and Organizations Involved

The success of this event was made possible through the collaborative efforts of various police agencies and organizations. Chief Ricky Watson and the Paris Police Department played a crucial role in ensuring the safety and smooth operation of the shopping trip. Sheriff Josh Frey and the Henry County Sheriff’s Department also lent their support. First Baptist Church Paris provided transportation, making it convenient for the children to reach the shopping destination. Henry County Rescue Squad also contributed by providing transportation. Henry County High School's Brian Welp with DECA and Diane McCord with the Criminal Justice Class provided shopping escorts, ensuring that the children had a pleasant shopping experience. Harrelson, Henry, and Lakewood Schools Guidance Counselors were also involved, providing guidance and support to the children. Additionally, Paris and Henry County School Resource Officers were present, adding an extra layer of security. Walmart also played a significant role by providing goodie bags for every child, making the shopping trip even more enjoyable.This event was a shining example of the power of community and the willingness of various organizations to come together and make a difference in the lives of children. It demonstrated the importance of supporting and caring for our youth during the holiday season.

The decision about which vaccines we need is a long and complex process. It starts with an annual review by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, part of the Centers for Disease Control. This committee publicly debates which vaccines to recommend and when to authorize them. Many people are involved, monitoring infectious diseases worldwide and conducting research on vaccine effectiveness and safety. It involves a lot of science and risk/reward analysis.Once the Department of Health and Human Services knows which vaccines are recommended, it uses data from providers to project how much of each immunization will be needed. Each month, orders are placed with the CDC to maintain a 120-day supply.

The Role of the Vaccine Association

The Vaccine Association's job is to handle the money aspect. They collect payments from health plans, insurers, and other payers and pass it on to the state to buy the vaccines. It's similar to a high-risk-pool mechanism. The carriers get discounts through the CDC, and on the provider side, it reduces administrative work. As of the last fiscal year, they raised about $24 million, with operating expenses slightly under 1% of the total. The association is overseen by a board of directors appointed by various officials.

The Importance of Expanding the Free-Vaccine Program

Being able to boost our immune systems against specific diseases is a great achievement. New Hampshire should expand the free-vaccine program. Getting sick at any age is bad, as it removes workers from their jobs. In years past, similar pointless bills would be scuttled in committee, but now we can't be sure.
